As the NFL draft approaches (April 22-24), several news outlets, football fans and scouts are giving their best educated guesses as to which team will pick former Florida QB and Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow.
ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay said recently that many in the general public can't understand why Tebow may not be a top NFL pick, but it has to do with his accuracy, how long it takes him to release the football, and the system he played in at Florida.
In fact, McShay had this to say of Tebow to the Boston Globe: "He can’t play quarterback in the NFL, I’m convinced of it. From his delivery to his footwork to his accuracy, you have to absolutely strip him down and build him back up. And it’s too late."
And Sporting News' draft analyst Russ Lande continues to document Tebow's struggles at the Senior Bowl.
It seems unlikely that Tebow will be selected in the draft’s first round, and most folks cannot agree on which NFL team he’ll suit up for come the start of the 2010 season.
Here’s a look at what various news media are reporting as to where Tebow may land.
Carolina Panthers: “If, as expected, Tebow falls out of the first round, the Panthers could be in position to draft him. They aren't scheduled to pick until the middle of the second round after trading their first-round selection to San Francisco last year in order to draft defensive end Everette Brown. Carolina could use an infusion of young talent at the quarterback position.” — Charles Chandler, Charlotte Observer
Jacksonville Jaguars: “Because of Tim Tebow’s roots in Jacksonville and the Jaguars’ need to increase ticket sales, the Jaguars’ evaluation of Tebow will be well-documented until the April draft. That doesn’t mean coach Jack Del Rio is ready to reveal his thoughts. ... Del Rio got in town Tuesday, and he’s eager to watch Tebow play all week in Mobile, Ala.” — Jeremy Fowler, Orlando Sentinel
New England Patriots: “First, while in some circles, Tom Brady's presence might be seen as a detractor here, it shouldn't be. ... Second, the creativity of Bill Belichick is a factor in that you'd want to find a gameday role for Tebow, and the Patriots coach has used players out-of-position in different ways. ... Third, elements of Urban Meyer's offense are implemented in the Patriots scheme. ... Fourth, Belichick will get as honest an evaluation of Tebow as anyone could hope to get, since he's close with Meyer.” — Albert Breer, Boston Globe
Tebow, while practicing for the Senior Bowl this week, told the Press Register he plans to let his play do the talking. "I've been focused and motivated. Not listening to what people say. At end of day, you don't have to impress 32 teams, you have to impress one. That's my goal.”
