Tebow hype has left us hung over

Mike Bianchi | SPORTS COMMENTARYForgive me, Lord, for I have sinned.

I am tired of Tim Tebow.

I am tired of hearing about him.

Tired of reading about him.

Tired of writing about him.

In fact, I'm so tired of writing about him, I'm going to write about him — again.

It's not his fault, mind you. He didn't ask for all this over-the-top idolization. He didn't ask adoring fans and an adulating sports media to deify him. He's a good kid and a great football player.

But enough is enough.

I'm as guilty as anyone in the media of fawning over his greatness and gushing over his goodness, but even I'm flat tuckered out on Timmy. Doctors have diagnosed it as a severe case of Chronic Tebow Fatigue.

And, believe me, it's spreading like a pox — even into places where you would least expect it. Gainesville Sun columnist Pat Dooley was in a health club recently and somebody came up to him and said, "I'm probably wrong to say this, but if I read another word about Tim Tebow I think I'm going to puke."

In Tebow's hometown of Jacksonville, sports radio personality David Lamm has sensed it, too. "People are getting tired of it," Lamm says. "If you read the Sports Illustrated cover story on Tim this week, you'd think he's not only the greatest football player of all time but the greatest human being, too."

See what I mean?

You get too much of anything — even if it's a good thing — and you get sick of it. If you listen to the same song — even if it's your favorite song — over and over again, you start to grow tired of it. And if you still keep hearing it, you start hating it. It starts to drive you nuts.

I believe that's what's starting to happen with Tebow. Fans — and we're talking about non- University of Florida fans — are starting to recoil when they hear his name or roll their eyes when they read about his toughness, his leadership, his Gipper-like speeches, even his missionary work in impoverished nations.

And they're starting to become nauseated when they hear Fox broadcaster Thom Brennaman swoon during the national championship game, "If you're fortunate enough to spend five minutes around Tim Tebow, your life is better for it." Or when Tebow was whistled for unsportsmanlike conduct for taunting Oklahoma's defense, Brennaman said, "That might be the first thing he's ever done wrong."

Gag.

Maybe all this glorification is why when Tebow had shoulder surgery a couple of days ago, the first thought that popped into many of our minds was, "Did a doctor do the operation or did Timmy simply perform the procedure on himself?"

It's certainly why Gregg Doyel, a national columnist for CBSsports.com, wrote earlier this week that "the idolatry of Tim Tebow has crossed the line" into the realm of "blasphemous."

"He has been built into this mythical, Biblical, puritanical figure by the media," Doyel said in an e-mail. "Tebow didn't ask for that, but he is the one who has to deal with the fallout."

Isn't he already dealing with it? Is there any question that Chronic Tebow Fatigue (CTF) is the reason he was left off so many Heisman ballots? And why do you think it is that UF's media relations staff is diligently working on a cure for CTF in today's endless 24-7 news cycle?

"We're aware of the trends in the celebrity curve," says Steve McClain, UF's associate athletic director in charge of sports information. "There's a buildup and then resentment. ... We're sensitive to Tim being overpublicized, but at the same time we're not the ones making the decisions about news."

He's right. It's those of us in the media who are guilty of overdosing on Tebow, but can you really blame us? We've become so accustomed to covering the scoundrels and scandals of sport that we went into a frenzy when a great story about a good kid came along.

And, so, we exploited and overexposed him.

We made everybody sick and tired of him.

We turned a quarterback into a demigod.

Not anymore.

I'm done.

This will be my last Tim Tebow column.

For at least a week.

    Hi,
There have been any real big name disappointments in the bowling departments, apart from Harbhajan Singh. From 6 games, he has bowled 19 overs for just 3 wickets! Considering how many he took against New Zealand, that is a big shock for a bowler of Harbhajan’s class. However, it is must be said that the deliveries he is bowling are for restricting runs more so than to take wickets. A positive to that is he has only conceded 118 runs at an economy rate of 6.21. There are not many players in the IPL who can boast such an economy rate. Nonetheless, class bowlers should be taking wickets at regular intervals instead of just tying down the batsmen. I guess Mumbai won’t mind that, as long as they are winning - considering they have the services of Zaheer Khan and Lasith Malinga at their disposal.

THANK YOU! This article is great!

With Denver making such a horrendous call with their draft pick, it's not likely to subside anytime soon...most unfortunate!

I think it's interesting that I haven't hear much about Lord Tebow's replacement. Bring on John Brantley and/or Trey Burton! lol.
